When I posted a question to Sobey's about their packaging on Facebook two weeks ago, I had no idea it would become the media story it has. Seems that I wasn't the only one this image touched a nerve with, and it's been encouraging to see so many voices speaking up together.
Here at Sola Skincare, we are always trying to do better in terms of waste and being green. Same goes for us at home. We stay away from single use items as often as we can, use cloth napkins, used cloth diapers and wipes when our girls were babes, don't drink bottled water, make our own skincare, cleaning products and toothpaste, etc. We're always working towards being more green, and are more aware of the waste we see around us.
So when my friend posted a picture from his local Sobey's of precut, peeled and packaged avocado. It hit a nerve with me and I asked a question on their facebook page. Well, I wasn't the only one who was bothered, and my comment went viral.
The comment was shared hundreds of times and I was contacted by Global News and The Toronto Star. The story has been covered in Metro News, The Huffington Post, and many more online and print outlets. Dragon's Den star Arlene Dickinson even made this awesome video where they tested Sobey's excessive avocado packaging against nature's already perfect package- otherwise known as "an avocado." So brilliant:
I guess what I've learned from this is that it's worth speaking up and letting big companies know that we're looking for more than low prices and mass produced products that harm the environment and create needless waste. Sometimes you can feel like you're only one person- what can you do? Well, it seems like sometimes one person can incite change, or at least start a conversation. It's worth it to speak up about environmental concerns and ask questions- you never know what will happen.
