Back To School!

September 02, 2015

Wow, I cannot believe it is September already! Why does the summer always fly by? My eldest requested a new lunch bag this week, and it got me thinking about the eco-friendly choices we make as a family when packing lunches for school.

lunch bags

For the last two years, our eldest has been rocking her Dabbawalla lunch bag. She’s requested a new one since she’s grown out her current bag. I really love these bags because they are insulated, super roomy, machine washable, and non-toxic. There are lots of great prints to choose from, they can take a beating and the construction is really well done – no rips, tears, wonky zippers etc, and after 2 years of daily use.  I’m impressed!

klean kanteen

Another lunch time must for both of our girls is their Klean Kanteen water bottles. Stainless steel body, BPA-free and silicone cap, wide mouth so it’s easy to clean and fit ice into. Plus it also comes in lots of colours and different types of lids, from sippy lids for toddlers, to a soft silicone spout for kids getting their new adult teeth in… We actually all have Klean Kanteen water bottles, and we love them so much.

Now onto the main attraction – containers! There are sooooo many options, from plastic, to glass, to stainless steel…. My favourite by far is from Lunchbots. The construction is solid, we’ve had ours for over a year now and it looks brand new, even when used every day. There are a lot of different options, from single serving sandwich size, to various versions featuring two, three or four compartments. It’s the one I reach for every day.

snack bags

And last but not least, fabric snack and sandwich bags. There are lots of companies that make fabric sandwich bags, and you can usually find locally made companies run by talented Mamas. They are usually cotton or PUL or a combination of those fabrics, and they close with velcro or a zipper. Usually they come in lots of cute prints, and you can involve your child by letting them pick the fabric that speaks to them!  One of the local Mama-run companies I’ve come across is 3 Little Monkeys. She has a great selection of snack and sandwich bags in various sizes and prints.

We are ready for back to school! Just a few more days of summer, then the madness of the school season will begin. I’ll miss the slower days of summer, with hours spent at the beach, soaking up the sun, picking fresh local berries, tending to our garden…. But I also look forward to the Fall, the hustle and bustle, the cooler air, scarves and boots.
