Herbology 101 is a series where we explore the healing properties of the Chinese medicinal herbs used in Sola Skincare. The practice of Chinese medicine has evolved over its 2,000 years and involves acupuncture, massage, physical exercise, nutritional healing, as well as herbal medicine.
Zhen Zhu Mu is the iridescent layer of the mollusk shell—otherwise known as mother of pearl. The shell is traditionally harvested in the coastal areas of the Guangdong, Guangxi and Hainan provinces for the use in Chinese medicine.
Once harvested, the Zhen Zhu Mu shell is cleaned of impurities and ground for medicinal purposes. Ailments that Zhen Zhu Mu works to heal include dizziness, vertigo, tinnitus, red, irritated eyes, anxiety, insomnia, and headaches.
The shell contains minerals such as calcium, zinc, magnesium and iron, as well as amino acids. It is anti-aging and anti-oxidant so it helps to regenerate skin cells, tighten skin and pores. Because of this mineral content, Zhen Zhu Mu is effective in the treatment of eczema and other skin problems, because of the shell's ability to combat dry skin. It also acts as an astringent and can treat acne, making it a suitable medicinal herb for natural skin care.
We included the Zhen Zhu Mu in the Sola Balancing Face Oil because of its high-mineral and anti-oxidant content. Infused in argan oil, tamanu oil, camelina oil, jojoba oil, and sweet almond oil, Zhen Zhu Mu works with other Chinese herbs (Dang Gui, Zhi Mu, Sheng Di Huang, and Ru Xiang) and the essential oils of carrot seed, lavender, and sandalwood to improve the skin's appearance on the face.
